The Hayward City Council unanimously approved allowing the 2018 Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival to once again start the main event, the Chequamegon 40, on Main Street in Hayward on Saturday morning, September 15, 2018.

In a request letter to the council, the festival director, Gary Crandall, said the format will be the same as in previous years. The race will start in front of the Hayward Primary School.

Main Street will be closed from 6:00 a.m. till 10:30 a.m. that morning.

Crandall said, “As in previous years, racers would travel down Main Street, cross Highway 63 and take a north turn onto Railroad Street. From there they would proceed to Highway 77 and head east out of the Town of Hayward to the Fish Hatchery Access to the American Birkebeiner Ski Trail.”

Crandall also said in the letter that local residents and businesses would be notified through signs and press releases. The festival would also have a meeting with the chief of police and Sawyer County sheriff to go over details of the race morning start.

“The Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival organization would like to extend a special thanks to the City of Hayward for its cooperation, encouragement and support through the many years we have been working together. Together we have made the City of Hayward a nationally known destination for the sport of off road bicycling enjoyed in a sustainable and responsible manner,” the letter stated.
