In Memory of Arliss B. Nichols
February 9, 1931 - November 2, 2017
Arliss B. Nichols, age 86, of Hayward, WI passed away on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at the Hayward Area Memorial Hospital.
Arliss was born February 9, 1931 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin the daughter of William and Hilda (Tollifson) Sands. Her family moved to Hayward when Arliss was a young girl and she went on to graduate from Hayward High School in 1949. Arliss was a receptionist at a car dealership in Minneapolis when a young Greyhound bus driver C.D. (Nick) Nichols stopped in to buy a car. He didn’t get the car; but she ended up with the love of her life. Arliss and Nick were joined in marriage on October 10, 1953
Arliss and Nick lived in Minneapolis, MN, Topeka, KS, Hoffman Estates, IL, Cranford, NJ, and Mendota Heights, MN before retiring to Hayward in 1981. Early on in their marriage they developed a winning formula. Nick was the breadwinner and gave his all to provide for his wife and family. Arliss raised the kids, took care of the house, handled the finances and did whatever else was needed for the family to prosper.
Arliss faced many health challenges over the years- rheumatoid arthritis, leukemia, colon cancer, heart disease and loss of vision yet she never let any of these get the best of her. She was always positive, upbeat and optimistic. Just a few days before her passing, she was talking of her plans for the next 3-4 years. Arliss was an avid golfer until arthritis forced her to leave the game. She loved playing cards. Whether it was poker at the casino, Hearts with Nick or Hand and Foot with the girls she always played to win. Arliss loved to entertain and was very active in a number of local organizations including the Hayward Lioness Club, Hayward Hospital Auxillary and the First Lutheran Church. She lived her life for others and her family was at the top of that list.
Arliss is survived by her three children, Steven (Verna “Charlie”) of Hayward, Cindy (Mark Pitzele) Sorensen of Maple Grove, MN, Scott “Tiger” (Mary) of Cottage Grove, MN; six grandsons, Scott, Jim, Christian, William, Zach and Carson; a sister-in-law, Roberta Nichols of Arlington Heights, IL; many nieces and nephews and her dear friend and soul sister Fern Magnusson of Hayward.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Nick; three sisters, Connie Piggott, Marvela Mertens, Ruth Bates; and one brother, Bill Sands.
Visitation will be held from 4-7 pm on November 10th at the Hayward Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church. A funeral service will be held at 10 am on November 11th at First Lutheran Church in Hayward with Pastors Joel Bacon and Dan Nordin officiating. Interment will follow the service and be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Hayward. A luncheon at the First Lutheran Church will be held following the interment.
