In Memory of Bernice S. Shafarik

Bernice Shafarik, age 90, of Hayward, WI passed away on Sunday, January 28, 2018 at Waters Edge Care Center in Hayward, WI.
Bernice Sophia Shafarik was born March 9, 1927 in Prentice, WI the daughter of Lee and Delight (Peterson) Hanson. She was raised in Prentice, WI and graduated from high school there. She went to work for the phone company in Prentice for several years. On June 7, 1947, Bernice was joined in marriage to Frank Shafarik in Phillips, WI. Bernice and Frank moved to Hayward, WI in 1957 where Bernice worked for the local phone company until it closed. Bernice worked various seasonal jobs at the Hayward Nursery and Laska’s Green House. Then she worked full time at MarketPlace in the meat department until she retired. Bernice enjoyed many family trips to Florida and the western states in their camper. She also loved fishing with Frank for walleye, hunting trips to Wyoming, cross country skiing, and bowling. She and Frank also spent many happy hours with their grandkids fishing, swimming and playing games. Bernice enjoyed volunteering with Meals on Wheels, something she did for 15 years. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hayward.
Bernice is survived by her two children, Tom (Mary) Shafarik of Hayward, Kathy Shafarik of Madison, WI; two grandchildren, Sam (Mary) Shafarik of Wausau, WI, Sarah Shafarik of Chicago, IL; two great granddaughters, Melody and Violet; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frank; one brother, Lee Hanson; and three half-sisters.
Bernice was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 17, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hayward with Father Gerard Willger officiating. A visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the church on Saturday, February 17th. Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Hayward.
