In Memory of Shawn Charles Swisher


June 20, 1945 - November 30, 2017

Shawn C. Swisher, age 72, of Ojibwa, WI died Thursday, November 30, 2017 at his home.

Shawn was a fishing and hunting enthusiast who was never more happy than when fishing for halibut, yellow fin tuna and salmon while on his 19’ boat, the Orphan Annie, in the Bering Sea off the coast of Adak, AK, or for marlin on his 25’ boat, Happy Seas, off Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.

He served his country in the United States Navy for 20 years in the field of telecommunications.

Shawn Charles Swisher was born on June 20, 1945 in Brooklyn, NY the son of Charles and Algury (Davis) Swisher. He grew up in Greenup, IL, graduating from Cumberland High School in 1963. Shawn earned a degree in electronics from DeVry University (then DeVry Technical College) in Chicago in 1965. He worked for WAND TV in Decatur, IL where he was the audio engineer in the late 1960’s for Mr. Music of Romper Room, a syndicated TV show. He also worked at WTHI as a video engineer and at WTWO as the morning engineer, both in Terre Haute, IN.

In 1975, Shawn joined the Navy. He was stationed first in San Diego, where he became an instructor of basic shipboard systems in communications. Shawn later served in Guam; Adak, AK; COM Third Fleet at Pearl Harbor, HA; and in the Persian Gulf. Shawn retired in 1995 from the Naval Training Station in Orlando, FL, where he helped close the telecommunications center when the base was closed.

Shawn earned Enlisted Service Warfare Specialist and Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist pins for all types of ships and aircraft. He also received Navy awards, including Navy Achievement Medals; Combat Action Ribbon; three Joint Meritorious Unit Commendations; three Battle E Awards; four Good Conduct Awards; two National Defense Medals; Navy Expedition Medal; four Sea Service Deployment Ribbons; two Navy and Marine Corps Oversea Ribbons; and earned the Pistol and Rifle Expert Ribbon.

In 1976, he married June Liffick of Prairie Creek, IN, who preceded him in death in 2002. Shawn moved to Ojibwa, WI in 2003 and was united in marriage to Cathleen Arnoldy of Roanoke, IN, in 2008.

While in Ojibwa, Shawn served as commander of American Legion Post #303 of Winter from 2011 to the present, helping that organization to become an active participant in community activities. He reorganized the Color and Rifle Squads to improve the honor and respect shown to veterans of all services at area veterans’ funerals. Shawn was also a member of the Sawyer County Sportsman Club.

He is survived by his wife Cathleen; daughters Sherri, Stacia, Susan and Shelly; sons Leon and Ernie Liffick; sister Carol (Peter) Walker; and brother Michael (Elisabeth) Swisher.

Shawn was preceded in death by his parents Charles & Algury; daughter Kelly.

A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 6, 2017 Winter Evangelical Free Church. Pastor Tonee Martin will officiate. Military Honors will be accorded by State of Wisconsin Military Honors Team and American Legion – WACEK-Slattery Post #303. Burial will be in Greenup Cemetery in Greenup, IL at a later date. Visitation will be held from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., Wednesday December 6 prior to the service at the church.
